EXERCISE 1 : FRACTION
Concept, Fraction, Number, Variable Content
A fraction is a number, that’s represents a part of a whole. Generally, the fraction can be a portion of any quantity
out of the whole thing and the whole can be any specific things or value. A complex fraction has a fraction in the
numerator or denominator. In a proper fraction, the numerator is less than the denominator.
The fractions include two parts, numerator and denominator.
• Numerator: It is the upper part of the fraction which is represents the sections of the fraction.
• Denominator: It is the lower or bottom part, which represents the total parts in which the fraction is divided.
While performing our daily activities, we use fractions unknowingly in many ways. You might say things like “We’re
having dinner at a quarter past seven”, or “we need 2 thirds of a cup of sugar for the cake”. 7/8 is the largest
fraction. The fraction symbol (/) appears as a line or slash dividing two numbers, one below the other. It can
appear in a few different ways. For example, ³/5 means three-fifths equal to 6.
Number: This is the study of the set of positive whole numbers which are usually called the set of natural
numbers. A branch of pure mathematics devoted to the study of the natural numbers and the integers. The most
commonly referenced are the following nine types: 1-Whole, 2-Natural, 3-Rational, 4-Irrational, 5-Even, 6-Odd,
7-Prime, 8-Composite, and 9-Integers. The symbol for numbers is (#).
Variable
A variable is a symbol, which represents one or more numbers. Each number or variable by itself, or product of
numbers and variables in an algebraic expression, is called a term. The coefficient is a number which is written
along with a variable or it is multiplied by the variable.
In Mathematics, a variable is an alphabet or term that’s represents an unknown number or unknown value or
unknown quantity. Variables are particularly used in the case of algebraic expression or algebra. For example,
x+7=3 is a linear equation where x is a variable, where 7 and 3 are constants.
A letter or symbol that performs one specific number, known or unknown is called a constant. A letter or symbol
which is represents any member of a collection of two or more numbers is called a variable.
In 3x =9, x is the variable and 9 is the constant. Then x is the variable and 3 is the constant. Here, x and y are the
variables and -10 is the constant value.
A constant has a known value. A “constant” simply means a fixed value or a value that does not change. Example
of constant are 2, 5, 0, -3, -7, 2/7, 7/9 etc.
These usual symbols and their values which called mathematical constants. Examples include: 0(zero), 1(one)
the natural number after zero.
