3 Wholesale market: In wholesale market, goods are supplied in bulk quantity to dealers.
4 Retail Market: In retail market, goods are sold in small quantities directly to the user or consumers or consumer
market. The consumer gets the goods for consumption and not for profit making.
5 Primary Market: Here, the product is sold by the manufacturers to wholesalers or consumers.
6 Secondary Market: Here, the commodities arrive from other markets. The dealings are commonly between
wholesalers and retailers.
Retail business
Retailing is a part of our life. In recent past buying and selling has become more formal and brand dominated.
• Traditional forms co-exist with organized retailers.
• Retailing encompasses the business activities involved in selling goods and services to consumers for their
personal, family, or household use. It includes every sale to final consumer ranging from cars to apparel to
meals at restaurants to movie tickets. Retailing is the last stage in the distribution channel.
Retail Management
Retailing includes all the activities involved in selling goods or services directly to final consumers for personal,
non-business use.
• The process of bringing the ultimate user to the main producer through series of stages where retailing is the
last one.
• It is not limited to quantities but to the exact requirement of last user.
• Bringing about operational efficiency at this last stage and making an environment so compelling that the
consumer looks nowhere else.
Fashion Retailing
In Fashion Retailing, the main types of retailers are
1 General merchandisers
2 Specialized merchandisers
1 General merchandisers
General Merchandisers carry many types of goods in several price ranges. It may be a rural general store or a
huge mass merchandiser.
2 Specialized merchandisers
Specialized merchandisers carry certain categories of goods to particular age groups, sizes, and consumer tastes
and preferences. They have more distinct group of customers. Examples: ZARA, Victoria’s Secret, Allen Solly etc.
Departmental Stores
Department store retailing is a retail establishment that employs at least 50 people and that carries a wide variety
of merchandise lines, including all the apparel items. Now home furnishings also added. It has the following
features.
• Large-scale mass merchandisers
• Usually carry a wide range of sizes
• Carry household goods
• “Departmentalized” by category/sizes of goods being sold
• Each department may have separate salespeople and payment areas.
• Generally known for high quality, fashion, and customer service.
• Usually offer credit and return or exchange privileges
• Offer numerous customer services such as gift wrap & layaway etc
• Sell to many income levels, but generally target middle to upper income customers
