While filing make sure:
- To check the radius frequently with a radius gauge.
- To use the broad surface to the job as datum for checking the size.
- Not to give excessive pressure while filing radius as the file is likely to slip.
Checking the radius
Objectives: At the end of this exercise you shall be able to
• check the radius with a radius gauge.
Before checking with a radius gauge ensure the radius gauge is perfectly clean. Remove burrs, if any, from the
workpiece. Check and make sure the profile of the gauge is not damaged.
The radius gauge should be held perpendicular to the radius to be checked. (Fig 1 and 2)

Observe the contact surfaces for any light passing through, check against the background of light. The gauge
should be moved along the filed length of the radius for checking. (Figs 3 and 4)
