Objectives
At the end of this exercise you shall be able to:
• convey the purpose of fabric swatch
• create swatch book
Procedure
A fabric swatch is a small piece of fabric (required dimension), that is cut from a larger roll of fabric. This sample
provides a representative piece of the fabric, allowing individuals to physically examine and feel the material
before making a purchase or using it for a project. It also give detailed information on fibers, basic construction of
fabrics, weights, construction, and weave comparison.
Purpose of fabric swatches:
- Fabric swatches are essential in the cloth industry and the design process. They help designers showcase the
type of fabric to be used.
- By examining a fabric swatch, designers can assess how colors and materials will look in reality before creating
the actual garment or textile.
- Swatches also demonstrate how colors and patterns will appear on the fabric, which may not be evident on
paper or a digital screen.
Obtaining fabric swatches:
- Obtain swatches from stores (both offline and online).
- Local fabric stores may provide swatches for free or at a negligible cost.
- Textile Manufactures , Wholesalers
- Online stores usually charge a small amount for fabric swatches.
Swatch library - storing and organizing fabric swatches:
- Create a swatch library or a swatch book.
- Attach swatches to a single piece of paper using double-sided tape, pins, or staples.
- Label each swatch with relevant information (fabric type, composition, color).
- Store the swatch book in plastic sleeves or a binder for easy reference when shopping for fabrics.
