Pipe welding: When welding the circumference of a mild steel pipe, the angles of the rod and the blowpipe are
given in relation to the tangent to the pipe at the point of welding.
The welding position can be seen in relation to the plane of the joint.
The techniques used will depend upon:
- The pipe wall thickness
- The welding positions
- Whether the pipe is fixed or can be rotated

When the pipe remains stationary, the following techniques are used
Position Method
At the top of the pipe, flat position Leftward or rightward
At the flank of a set on branch when both pipe axes are Leftward or rightward
in horizontal flat position.
Leftward or rightward Leftward or rightward or
all-position rightward
The weld at the bottom of a pipe is made in the Leftward or rightward or
overhead position. all-position rightward
