Objectives
At the end of this lesson you shall be able to
• know about various trims & accessories used in garment industry
• explore and design different trims & accessories to give a complete look to the garment
• conceptualize their ideas of different trims & accessories with the garments.

Trimmings and Accessories Used in Apparel Industry

In garments manufacturing, fabrics are not the only material to make garments. Several types of materials are
used here for both decorative and functional purposes. Where some are called trimmings and others are called
accessories.
Trims are the materials which attached with the garments by sewing, gluing, pressing or heat setting. Trimmings
have both functional and aesthetic properties. Sewing thread, zipper, button etc. are some examples of trimming.
Accessories are the materials which are used to give a finishing touch to your clothing products. The materials
which are used to make a garment attractive for selling and packing other than fabric and trims is called accessories.
Accessories don’t have the functional properties but have the aesthetic properties. Hanger, polybag, carton etc.
are some examples of accessories.
Key differences between trimmings and accessories

1 Trimmings are readily attached with your clothing products but accessories are not readily attached with your
clothing products.
2 Trimmings have both functional and non-functional properties but accessories have only non-functional
properties.
3 Trimmings are used to complete your clothing products and accessories are used to finish and pack your
clothing products.
4 Button, zipper, rivet, lining, lace etc. are some examples of trimmings and polybag, safety pin, belts, scotch
tape, carton etc. are some examples of accessories.

1 Sewing Thread

It is the most important trim of any garment industry. Garments cannot
be stitched without a sewing thread. Even though sewing thread typically
makes up a small portion of the cost of clothing, it has a huge impact on
the final item’s appearance and durability. Natural and synthetic fibres can
both be used to make sewing thread.

2 Buttons

Buttons are the one item that can be used with any outfit and serve as
both a functional and decorative element. It is a tiny, can be made of
plastic, wood, metal, horn, shell or glass etc. It is typically a fastener
that is inserted into a loop of thread or a buttonhole.
