DRESS MAKING - CITS
(II) Spreading carriage method or Semi-automatic method:
Operating Procedure: The cloth is unwound and spread through semi-automatic method. The spreading head
or carriage is moved to and fro and spread fabric over the table. Movement along the table and fabric pulling can
be controlled by the buttons.
Advantages:
• Fast and economical
• Proper selvedge alignment
• Ease to operate with electronic clutch
Disadvantages:
• Fabric roll loading, cutting is still manual
• No suitable for larger scale industry
• Small role size
(III) Automatic Spreading Method:
Operating Procedure: Automatic spreading machines are used to handle the spreading process from start to
finish, eliminating the need for several people. With automated speed control, the fabric travels smoothly through
the machine, minimizing human errors and ensuring consistent results.
Advantages:
• Automatic loading/unloading device for fabric rolls
• Automatic roll turning arrangement for face to back lay
• Automatic leveling device for edge alignment
• Automatic cutting device at the end of a run
• Automatic tensioning device to control fabric tension
• Automatic lay height sensor
• Programmable lay length, ply height
• Spreading speed up to 140 m/min
Disadvantages:
• It is very expensive so that capital investment is high.
• A skillful operator is needed to operate these types of machines.
Types/Forms / modes of Spreading
The mode of fabric spreading is the way fabric plies are laid out for cutting.
The spreading mode is determined by the properties of the fabric, the company’s quality standards, and the
equipment available.
Two fabric characteristics that decide the mode of spreading are fabric direction and fabric nap direction.
There are some modes or forms of spreading used in apparel manufacturing units. We can choose the suitable
type according to the fabric type.
(a) Face up in a single direction:
All the plies are spread in one direction, with their faces side up. After a ply is laid it is cut across its width from the
roll of cloth. This process is repeated until all the plies needed are spread. This method of spreading is the most
widely used.
