           Seams

           Objectives: At the end of this exercise you shall be able to:
           •  classify the seam types
           •  learn and sew the different types of seams.


           Stitch the seams and seam finish given below:          –   Mock Flat fell seam
           –   Plain seam                                         –   Corded or Piped seam
           –   Plain seam with Single Top stitch                  –   Faced Seam
           –   Plain seam with Double Top seam                    –   Mock French seam
           –   Hairline seam                                      –   Serged seam
           –   Lapped seam                                        –   Slot seam
           –   French seam                                        –   Strap seam
           –   Flat and felled seam                               –  Taped seam
           Types of Seams

           In a Plain seam, two fabrics are joined together along the seam line by a  line of stitching. It is also called a
           single needle Butterfly stitch as once the seam is made the seam allowances are pressed open to either side of
           the seam line to look like a butterfly. This is the simplest and easiest seam to make. It can be made by hand or
           machine. (Fig 2)

           How to sew a Plain seam
           Keep the two fabrics together with right sides together. Make sure that stitching lines are aligned. Pin in place
           Stitch along the line you have made marking of the seam line.
           Start and end with the back tack for strength and reinforcement .

           Do not forget to press the seam open with a hot iron.
