Practice on 504 – Three thread overedge machine
This stitch type is formed with three thread; it has one needle thread and two looper threads.
To perform work on a three-thread overlock machine, follow these steps:
1 Threading the Machine:
- Thread the machine in the proper order as specified in your machine’s manual.
- Set the tensions, stitch width, and stitch length to the recommended settings.
2 Align the Fabric Edge:
- Begin by aligning the fabric edge under the presser foot of your overlock machine.
- Make sure the fabric is positioned correctly to start sewing.
3 Sew Slowly:
- When sewing an overlock stitch, maintain a steady and controlled pace.
- Sewing too fast can lead to uneven stitches or fabric bunching.
4 Trim the Excess Fabric:
- As you sew, the overlock machine will simultaneously trim the fabric edges and encase them with thread.
- This creates a neat and secure finish that prevents fraying.
5 Use an Overlock Foot:
- To sew an overlock stitch, you’ll need a specialty overlock sewing machine or an overlock foot attachment
for a regular sewing machine.
- Attach the overlock foot to your machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
6 Stitch Settings:
- Set your machine to the overlock stitch mode.
- Adjust the stitch length and width as needed for your project.
7 Stitch Along the Edge:
- Line up the fabric edge with the guide bar on the overlock foot.
- Sew slowly, maintaining control as you stitch along the edge.
- If sewing a curved seam, stop periodically to pivot and realign the fabric edge.
8 Finishing Touches:
- Once you’ve completed the seam, trim any excess fabric threads.
- Press the seam with an iron to set the stitches.
