607 – Flatseam
The 606 flatlock has over the years been replaced to a large extent with stitch type 607 flatseam. This stitch type
is produced using four needles, one looper, and one top covering thread.
Whilst thread consumption remains high with this stitch type it is lower than the 606 flatseam at 32 metres of
thread per metre of seam. The 600 stitch type classifications have the advantage of delivering flat, comfortable
seams with high seam elongation. (Fig 16)

Practice on Different Sewing Machines
Practice on Single Thread Chain stitch Sewing Machine
Steps for working with a 101 Single Thread Chainstitch Sewing Machine. This type of stitch is often used for
temporary stitching or basting. Here’s how you can operate it:
1 Thread the Machine:
- Begin by threading the sewing machine. Make sure the needle is properly inserted.
- Ensure that the tension settings are appropriate for the fabric you’re working with.
2 Position Your Fabric:
- Place your fabric under the presser foot, aligning the edge you want to stitch.
- Lower the presser foot to secure the fabric in place.
3 Start Stitching:
- Gently press the foot pedal to start the machine.
- As the needle descends through the fabric, it carries the needle thread with it.
- A loop of sewing thread is formed in the scarf of the needle as the needle begins to rise from the bottom of
its stroke.
4 Continue Stitching:
- Keep guiding the fabric along the desired stitching line.
- The single thread chainstitch is formed using just one sewing thread introduced by the needle.
- Be mindful of the seam runback tendency—this stitch may loosen from the finishing end of the seam.
5 Finishing:
- When you reach the end of your stitching line, lift the presser foot.
- Trim the excess thread, leaving a tail.
- Secure the stitch by tying a knot or using a backstitch.
Remember that the 101 Single Thread Chainstitch is primarily for temporary purposes (Fig 17)
