Lesson 31 - 35 (2) : Dart Manipulation
Objectives
At the end of this lesson you shall be able to
• Know about the importance of dart manipulation and their techniques.
• Understand about single dart series & two dart series.
• Develop the capability and skills of creating the patterns for designer wear with dart manipulation techniques.
Principle: A dart can be transferred to any location around the pattern’s outline from a designated pivotal point
without affecting the size or fit of the garment.
Dart Manipulation:
It is the process of changing the location of a dart within the pattern frame. The manipulation of darts is most
creative around the women’s bust area.
There are two techniques of dart manipulation:
1 Slash-Spread Technique: - In the slash and spread technique, as the name implies the pattern is slashed or
cut on the desired line and as the old dart or excess is closed, the pattern itself spreads on the new position,
to create the new design. Some of the new dart positions.
2 Pivotal-Transfer Technique: - The pivotal-transfer technique involves manipulating the original working
pattern into a new shape by pivoting, shifting and tracing, instead of cutting.
Single-Dart Series
A one-dart seamless basic bodice is traced for the following projects.
Remember: The working pattern is never altered (only traced) because it is used to create other designs. Save
the pattern projects for future use.
Slash-Spread Technique
Waist Dart shifted to Mid-Shoulder Dart
Manipulation steps:
• Trace the basic bodice front side pattern.
• Mark the mid shoulder dart location.
• Label the waist dart legs as A and B.
• Draw slash line from mid shoulder dart location to bust point.
• Slash pattern from mid shoulder point to near bust point. (not through bust point)
• Close dart legs A and B. Tape.
