DRESS MAKING - CITS
Different Types of Dress Forms
Display Dress Form
Display Dress Forms are mostly used for displaying garments and the creation of photoshoot samples. It comes
in various sizes with no standard measurements.
Professional Dress Form
These dress-forms are made for the sole purpose of the fitting, draping, pinning, etc. with features including
adjustable shoulder for easy put on and removal of garments, wheel stand for easy mobility, caged bottom to
assist hemming. These also come with adjustable or removable arms which can be very much useful for the fitting
of sleeved garments.
Bifurcated Dress Form
It is similar to professional dress form, with the only difference being included legs for fittings of shorts and pants.
Adjustable dress form
As the name suggests, in this dress form the measurements can be changed according to various sizes. The
sizes can be changed with the dials which are placed at critical measuring points as in center back, center front,
side seam, neck.
The drawback of these is the lack of collapsible shoulders and are not ideal for pining or draping. These are
mostly light-weighted with a hollow interior and are fragile in use.
Sewing Needle
NEEDLE is a small slender pointed tool that has an eye for thread at one end and that is used for sewing. Whether
the sewing process is done by hand or with machine assistance, a needle is always the key component. However,
we cannot use the same type of needles for both hand sewing and machine sewing.
Types of Sewing Needles
Sewing needles can be of two main types: hand-sewing needle and machine needles. Each type has its unique
characteristics and applications.
Hand sewing needles
Hand sewing needles are used for hand sewing work or embroidery. These needles are
composed of 3 different parts: the eye, the body (shaft), and the point.
EYE: The eye refers to the hole through which the thread passes. The size and shape of the
eye can vary based on the needle type and size.
SHAFT: A needle shaft or shank is the long part of the needle that extends from the eye to
the point.
The point is the sharp tip of the needle, which is the first point of contact with the material
you’re sewing.
Ball point: used for knit fabrics. The ball point does not separate the fibers, stretching them
out of shape, but rather goes around and between them, retaining the integrity of the fabric.
