DRESS MAKING - CITS
7 Embroidery Scissors
Embroidery scissors are small scissors that are frequently used in embroidery projects
to cut yarn, but they’re also a great sewing tool. You can use them to clip into seam
allowances, make precise cuts in small areas like snipping into the corners of a welt
pocket, or clean up loose bits of thread.
8 Thread Clippers
Thread clippers are a handy little cutting tool that allows for the snipping of threads. They
can come in a variety of shapes: some are spring-loaded, some come with a ring that
allows you to “wear” the clipper on your finger, and some are made in a U-shape. They
remain open until you close them to make a cut, upon which they return to their open
state. This makes it really quick and easy to trim unwanted threads from your fabric.
9 Seam Ripper
Seam rippers are specifically designed for ripping out stitches from seams, either as a
result of an error or during alterations. They should be used carefully to prevent damage
to the fabric. It has a U-shaped blade where one side is slightly longer than the other
side. The most popular way to use the sewing tool is to slide the longer side into the
seam and grab the thread you want to cut. The shorter side of the tool usually has a
plastic ball for protection. The curved area between the arms is very sharp, and here the
thread gets sliced.
10 Buttonhole Scissors
Buttonhole scissors are designed to cut the perfect buttonhole. These scissors can cut
the fabric without damaging or stretching the fabric. The length can be adjusted, so it
always cut the perfect size hole. Buttonhole scissors have notches in the blades. These
notches are there so you can cut a buttonhole without cutting the edge of the fabric. They
also have a small screw that is used to adjust the length of the cut. To use the scissors,
first determine the length of the hole and adjust the screw, then cut the hole.

Dress Form
A dress form is a three-dimensional model of a torso or an entire body, moulded to take
the shape of the human body. It comes in different sizes which often differ according to
manufacturers. It is mostly used for fitting clothing that is being designed or sewed. These are
available for male, female and kids dress forms.
Difference between Dress Form and Mannequins
Most often people get confused with the difference between dress form and mannequins. The
difference lies in the material with which they are made. A dress form is usually constructed
with a hard interior covered by foam and fabric covering making it helpful for pinning.
Whereas a mannequin is made of hard material like fiberglass, plastic or even metal, most
often depicting an entire body. Another difference is the postures between them. A dress form
will always have a straight pose as it needs to justify draping. Whereas a mannequin can be
of any desired position to complement the dress as well as act as an aesthetic addition to a
retail store.
