• Draw the socket as per dimensions.
• Insert/Draw the spigot and locate with the hole of the socket.
• Insert the cotter keeping the straight edge of the cotter with the straight end of the socket.
• Follow the procedures of section and complete the view.
• Draw plan and side view.
• Prepare bill of material list.
Exercise 8.48
The details of the knuckle joint is given in the work book. Draw the details as given with complete dimensions.
For assembly follow the procedure given below.
• Draw the fork end and eye end in line aligning with the centre line.
• Insert the cylindrical pin through the hole in them.
• Draw the collar in position and insert the taper pin.
• Follow the other procedures for section and complete the sectional view.
• Project the plan.
• Prepare the bill of material list.
Pipes and pipe fitting
Pipes are hollow cylinders of uniform wall thickness. Pipes are used with their fittings to carry water, oil, chemical
fluids, steam gas etc.
Selection of pipe material is based on the following factors.
• Cost of production/connection
• Type of joint required
• Pressure and temperature of fluid
• Velocity of fluid
• Physical and chemical properties etc.
Following metals and materials are used for making pipes.
• Galvanised iron
• Cast iron
• Cement
• Copper
• Poly Vinyle chloride (PVC)
• Poly Proplene (PP) etc.
Pipe connections are made to different lengths with branches and bends using pipe fitting accessories according
to the requirements. (Fig 10)
There are different pipe fitting accessories available for different purpose. They are
• Sockets
• Nipples
• Elbows
• Tees
• Bends
• Unions etc.
