Check for improper contact in
alternator connectors (P, IG, S and Yes
1 L) or open circuit in wiring (including Repair fault and start engine a
IG and CHARGE circuit fuses) or a charge lamp turned on ?
shot circuit
No
No
yes
Go to step 4
Turn Ignition off. Check for a short Yes
circuit in load between L and ground.
2 (Electric choke element, emission
computer etc.)
Repair or replace load device
No between L and ground
Start engine and check battery voltage at
engine speed of 2000 rpm. (All other electrical No Ground alternator “F” terminal and
3 loads off). Is voltage 14.5V + 0.6V ? Lower raise engine speed to 200 rpm is “B”
Note : When regulator temperature is above terminal voltage above 13V?
80° F. Voltage range is 13.0 + 15.5V Yes No
Replace IC Repair alternator
regulator (Tri (Open in coil,
Yes open, etc) brushes, etc)
Check alternator output using a carbon PH
tester. (Sun VAT - 40 or equivalent). When No
4 loaded (battery voltage no lower than 12V) Repair alternator (defective diode
is current output within 10% of alternator stator, etc)
rated output?
Yes OK Repeat step 4
If charge lamp is still on, check
charge lamp circuit again.
