Introduction

A pump may have defined as, a mechanical device which when interposed in pipeline converts mechanical
energy supplied to it from some external source (say an electric motor) into hydraulic energy and transfers the
same to the fluid flowing through the pipeline, thereby increasing the pressure energy of flowing fluid, which is
subsequently converted into potential energy to lift fluid from lower side and deliver it to higher side.

In another words, pump is a device used to,
1 Lift the liquid to required height against the force of gravity.
2 Overcome the resistance of fluid to flow through pipe and the pump itself.
