1 Positive displacement pumps
Reciprocating pump
2 Rotodynamic pump
Centrifugal pump
Positive displacement pumps
Liquid is sucked and pushed or displaced due to thrust exerted on it by a moving member (piston) which
results in lifting the liquid to the required height.
Rotodynamic (Rotary type) pump
Liquid passes through a rotating element, which is called impeller. When the liquid passes through the impeller, its
angular momentum changes. Due to this, pressure energy of liquid is increased, which results in lifting the liquid
to the required height.
