           Lesson 6 & 7 (2) : Technical terms related to trade

            Objectives

At the end of this lesson you shall be able to
           • gain knowledge about different terminologies used in the field of garment construction
           • describe their garments in a more professional manner, by using the correct terminology
           • enhanced their knowledge and confidence to respond creatively to a design brief within the Apparel market.

To communicate effectively in the workroom and to minimize errors due to misunderstanding, a person should
know and understand terminology. This chapter introduces definitions of technical terms used in apparel industry.
           Pattern Making Terms
Pattern: A pattern is the template from which the parts of a garment are traced onto fabrics before being cut out
and assembled. Patterns are usually made of paper, and are sometimes made of paperboard or cardboard.
The process of making or cutting patterns is called Patternmaking.
A sloper pattern, also called a block pattern, from which patterns for many different styles can be developed. The
process of changing the size of a finished pattern is called grading.
Pattern drafting: A system of patternmaking that depends on measurements taken from a form or model to
create basic, foundation, or design patterns. An example is the draft of the basic pattern set.

Flat patternmaking / Pattern manipulation: A system of patternmaking that depends on previously developed
patterns. The act of slashing and spreading, or pivoting a pattern to alter its original shape. The new pattern shape
represents design features of the garment.
Draping: Draping is a process of creating patterns with muslin cloth on a dress form. A piece of fabric is draped
on the body or dress form with positions of darts and pleats. Interesting and beautiful drapes can be achieved
           through this method.
