DRESS MAKING - CITS
5.2 Plaid Fabrics (Checked Designs)
For preparing markers for Plaid fabrics (Checked Design fabrics), we have to consider horizontal lines, which
are running from one selvedge to other instead of vertical lines. For example the center front line of the Front
pattern is aligned with prominent vertical line or bar and the two Fronts are laid nearby to get the horizontal line
matching. The Centre Back line of the back pattern and Yoke center is also aligned with the same vertical line or
bar followed for Front, to get perfection. At the same time, the checks are matched at seams for both front and
back patterns. The pocket can be laid near the Front to get the perfect horizontal line matching, if possible. It is
better to align the Sleeve center with the selected prominent vertical line for line matching with the yoke. Also, the
collar and Cuffs can be laid with the same line matching if possible.
5.3 One Way Designs, Napped fabrics & Floral Prints
Napped fabrics like Velvet and Corduroy have a visible color difference on one side when they are held upside
down. Also the one-way designs and floral designs are appearing differently depending on the direction from
which they are viewed. While preparing markers for Napped fabrics, Floral prints or one way designs, all the
patterns must be laid out in one direction. Decide on the “top” of the fabric, and follow this direction when placing
the pattern pieces, so that the nap or design will on in one direction.
