EXERCISE 9.4: Remove the starter motor from vehicle
and test its performance
Objectives
At the end of this exercise you shall be able to
• pull in and hold in test performance
• pinion return test
• no-load performance test.
Requirements
Tools/Instruments Materials
• Trainees tool kit - 1 No. • Emery paper - as reqd.
• Box spanner set - 1 No. • Hacksaw blade - as reqd.
• 10 mm rod - 1 No. • Grease - as reqd.
Equipments/Machines
• Running vehicle - 1 No.
Procedure
TASK1: Test the starter motor for performance
1 Remove starter motor assembly from vehicle
Pull in test
- Connect the test leads as shown in the Fig 1.
- Check that the pinion (over-running clutch) jumps out; if it does not, replace it.
Pinion return test
- Disconnect the negative lead.(Fig 2)
- Check to make sure that the pinion returns inward quickly.
